Why You Should Check Your Credit Score

There are many reasons why you should improve your credit score. Now, more than ever, your credit score is being used for more things than just to determine how much of a financial risk you are, with regards to extending credit. Many companies now use your credit score as part of the employee screening process when hiring. Law enforcement has been doing this for years. So if you are thinking of a career in law enforcement and you have bad credit, don't waste your time applying until you bring up your credit score.

Apartments are now doing the same, when screening new tenants to rent to. When you borrow money, or get a credit card, or buy a car, you must have a good credit score, or you pay a higher interest rate. So your credit score is far more important than you may have thought. It seems that it has almost become a gauge of your personal character. So knowing how to bring your credit score up is something everyone should know how to do. The first thing you should do is to get a copy of your credit report and study it. There are three major credit reporting agencies and they are required in most states to provide you with a free copy once a year on demand.

They are, Trans Union, Experian and Equifax. See if there are any errors and if there are, you must get the documentation to show this and then contact the agency to have them rectified. The next step to bringing up your credit score, is to pay off and consolidate your credit cards, if they have been a problem to you in the past. Credit cards are getting easier and easier to get and no sooner do you have them, then the interest rate jumps through the roof and they can become a problem. So make your credit cards work for you in the credit score game.

If impulsive spending has been a problem with your credit cards, then take them out of your wallet and put them away somewhere. If paying your bills late has been a problem, then make it a policy to pay them on time and do it. Create a prudent reserve in your bank to pay your bills with, so you will always have the money to pay them on time, or early. If you have a bad credit score then you probably have been doing something to get it. Don't close accounts. If you have an account that you would like to finally get off your back, then pay it down to the minimum and keep it there.

The longer an account stays open with no bad reports the better you look. So after you get your credit cards under control and working for you, you might consider opening credit accounts and getting a minimum balance just for the purpose of raising your credit score. Finally, be patient. It takes a year or so for things to start to bear fruit for you in the credit game. So take the steps and start thinking positive thoughts about your credit score, it’ll soon be higher than you ever though possible!
