How To Improve Your Credit Score
The first step to repairing and upgrading your credit score is to understand what a credit score is and how it’s calculated. The majority of Americans don't even know what their credit score is. Many assume that they can take very few proactive steps to influence their credit score, so they just try to pay their bills on time and hope for the best. The fact is that you can take an active part in having a positive impact on your credit score.
Your credit score can sometimes be referred to as a FICO score, because it was developed by Fair Isaac & Co. It will be a single number between 350 and 800, a lower number being less advantageous and a higher number more advantageous. Credit cards play an important part in your credit rating. There is no hard-set rule regarding the amount you have and the balance on them but there are two big rules to remember with regards to credit cards and a credit rating.
Rule number one is, if you have credit cards, use them so there is some balance on them and never make a late payment. Rule number two is, if you don't have any credit cards, then you should get some and use them. If you really don't like the idea of using a credit card just to use it then withdraw some money from the credit card account and place the money in an interest bearing bank account. This will diminish the loss you take on the interest you have to pay.
Remember that you have to use credit to get a credit rating. One wrong assumption people can make is that they assume that their net worth can have some impact on their credit score. Improving your credit score is a multi-stepped process and will take some strategy. The sooner you start the sooner you will see results. If you have multiple high interest credit cards, it is wise to consolidate those debts, with one loan that is used to pay them all off. The amount of interest you pay is irrelevant to your credit rating.
Another important step to take is to go get your credit report and see if there are any mistakes that can be rectified. If there are any then it is relatively easy to have them taken off your credit report. Study your credit report, not just for mistakes but also for any inaccuracies. With your credit rating so important to you, it only stands to reason that you understand how it works and then use this knowledge to your advantage.
