Correcting Information on Your Credit Report

Even if you feel that you have perfect credit, it is important to check your credit report on a regular basis, to insure that there are no irregularities on it. Mistakes do happen and if you don't work to have them taken off, or corrected, then no one will. Credit agencies report the information as they receive it. So, if anyone sends them information regarding your credit history, that is less than accurate, they have no way of knowing this and it will be added to your credit report.

If you think mistakes on credit reports are the rare exception, then you might be surprised to know that studies have determined that the majority of credit reports have mistakes, or inaccurate information on them. This means that the odds are, that there is something on your credit report that is less than accurate. If you are planning to apply for credit, it is imperative that you go over your credit report before you apply. This will allow you to repair any mistakes that might have happened.

Also it will give you some time to work on raising your credit score, if it isn't where you would like it to be. There are three major credit reporting agencies in the U.S. and they are required by law, to make available to you, a free copy of your credit report on demand, once a year. If you examine one from one agency and find no errors, don't make the assumption that the others are error free also. They each operate independent of one another and all of your credit reports will most likely be different in some ways.

If you find any errors, there is a process for having them removed. When you receive your copy of your credit report, they will include instructions for disputing any information in the report. If there is more than one error in your credit report, than you should file a separate dispute for each error. There are several good reasons for staying familiar with your credit score and your credit report.

One of them is that with identity theft so prevalent in today’s world, you will be able to see if someone has stolen yours before there is too much damage, by examining your credit report. Another reason is, with more and more businesses and agencies relying on your credit report, with regards to the decisions they make about doing business with you, it only makes good sense that you work to keep your credit report in order as best you can.
