Clear Your Credit Report of Errors

Whether you like it or not, your credit history is being compiled and is available for businesses to examine, at their request. More and more, in this day and age, it is being used for so many things other than just as a rating system for your ability to pay your bills. Businesses now regularly use it as a tool to screen new employees when they are hiring. Landlords use it when considering who to rent to and other businesses use it as well.
 

It contains not only the information on your history of paying your bills, but also such things as if you have ever been sued, been arrested, or filed for bankruptcy. If there are mistakes on your credit report, it is up to you to find them and have them removed. If you don't do it, then no one else will and they will remain there and anyone who sees them will accept them as fact.
 

The truth is that mistakes do happen and they happen far too often, so if you haven't taken a good look at your credit report recently, maybe you should. Most states require that credit agencies make available to you, upon request, a free copy of your credit report once a year. So simply contact them and get yours:

Once you have found a mistake, then you must contact both the credit reporting agency and the organization that provided the false information. When you contact them in writing, include a letter detailing the item and copies of the documents that prove your case. Do not send originals. Also include in your complaint, a copy of your credit report with the mistakes circled.
 

They are required, under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, to remove the mistake in a reasonable time frame. Bear in mind that they only report the information as they receive it and have no way of verifying what they receive, from the agencies that send it to them, so make a point of being polite in your dealings with them.
