Why Check Your Credit Report?

The importance of checking your credit cannot be over stated. Your credit report is a copy of your credit history but it also contains much more information than you may think. It also details if you have gone through any bankruptcy or if you have been sued. It will also show if you have ever been arrested.

One would assume that with such important information on a person’s life being documented that no mistakes would be made. This is not the case though. Far too often mistakes are made and it is up to you to find them and have them taken off your credit report. There are three major credit reporting agencies in the U.S. and they are required to provide you with a copy of your credit report annually, free of charge, upon request. They are listed in the yellow pages of your phone book under the listing of “credit agencies”.

Another reason to check your credit report annually is to avoid damage due to identity theft. If your identity is stolen and you never see the bills that are created from the use of your identity, then they will eventually show up on your credit report and the sooner you start work on repairing the damage, the sooner you will get results. Another reason for checking your credit is because you may have a lower rating than you think you have and might want to begin to take steps to bring your credit score up.

Too many people assume that because they haven't been delinquent or defaulted on credit that they have great credit. You have to use credit to establish credit. So if you haven't been playing the credit game then you might be surprised to learn that your credit score is lower than you think.

Not paying attention to your credit is a mistake you can’t afford to make. It seems that out of sight, out of mind is the attitude that far too many people take on their credit score and their credit report. If you plan on buying a house or property then you have to take into account your credit score or you will be punished by higher interest rates when you do apply for, and receive, a loan. It costs nothing and it is easy to do so it just makes sense to not do it. So make a point of contacting one of the three major credit reporting agencies and get a free copy of your credit report as soon as possible.
